Tampa is only several weeks into its one-year experiment with e-scooters. Reports of injuries are beginning to surface. ABC Action News reported the story of a Tampa resident who was injured less than 15 minutes after his first rental began. All he did was maneuver his scooter a little too close to the curb, where his foot got caught and twisted, and he suffered a serious leg fracture. His injury required surgery and he reported nearly $100,000 in medical expenses, including hospital charges.
Action News also reported the emergency department at Tampa General Hospital showed nearly 50 scooter-related injuries over the past several months. Their data did not reflect how many of these cases involved e- scooters. They reported orthopedic injuries, head injuries and collisions with cars. There was one death in Tampa in the last several months when a person on a scooter apparently turned into the path of an oncoming truck.
Why E-Scooters Can Be Dangerous & Cause Serious Injuries
There is no requirement that someone renting an e-scooter have any experience or safety training. Although helmets are suggested, there is not a requirement that one be used. E-Scooters in Tampa can travel up to 15 mph, which is a very common cruising speed for a recreational cyclist. Most serious cyclists would not consider riding a bicycle without a helmet. Certainly, no bicycle club would permit anyone to join one of their organized rides without a helmet. The public should be strongly cautioned that riding any type of scooter without a helmet exposes them to serious traumatic brain injury in the event of a crash, even at very low speeds.
