CLEARWATER —A motorcycle crash with a car at Belcher Road and Drew Street in Clearwater took the life of a 50-year-old Seminole man Thursday, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
The 2003 Honda motorcycle was traveling south on Belcher Road about 3:20 p.m. approaching the intersection with Drew Street. A 1999 four-door Mercury on the northbound side of Belcher Road turned left in front of the motorcycle to enter the parking of a Hess gas station, according to police.
The cyclist died at the scene. It is unknown whether the car’s occupants were injured. The crash remains under investigation.
This kind of collision, involving a car turning left into the path of an oncoming motorcycle, is the most common type of collision involving a motorcycle and a car. The driver of the car often reports not seeing the approaching cycle. While a motorcycle is undoubtedly less visible than a car, it is the driver’s responsibility to look carefully enough to make sure that it is not violating a right of way.
