Cycling Fatality in Lakewood Ranch Claims Life of 83 Year Old Man

An avid cyclist and walker who was described by a friend as a “very strong loving Christian” died as result of serious injuries suffered in a bicycle crash. The collision happened around 10:30 a.m. on Friday, according to the Bradenton Herald news. A report filed by the Florida Highway Patrol said Donald Mader and his wife, Joyce, who are in their 80s and regular cycling enthusiasts, were struck by a southbound car that ran a red light at Lakewood Ranch Boulevard at Parkside Place. The 22 year-old driver was ticketed for “disregarding a traffic signal.”

A spokesman for the FHP said the collision occurred as the couple was attempting a left turn onto Lakewood Blvd. The red light runner hit the front left side of Mader’s bicycle, causing him to collide with his wife’s bicycle. The vehicle continued on, going southbound through the intersection and crashed into the rear of another vehicle.

The investigation hasn’t revealed what caused the driver to disregard the traffic signal. But it’s another sad example of a driver whose mistake cost someone their life – a man who was doing something he enjoyed and had done nothing improper.

Law enforcement say a traffic homicide investigation will be conducted to decide if any criminal violations occurred.
