A 17-year-old Lutz teen was tragically killed after a hit-and-run driver struck his parked car recently. According to the Tampa Bay Times, the young man and his 16-year-old girlfriend were stopped at the end of Sunlake Drive when a motorist slammed into the SUV they were sitting in, causing it to overturn.
The teenage driver was taken to a local hospital where he died of his injuries. His passenger was also taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. The Florida Highway Patrol reported the wreck is still under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.
The news article went on to say the 23 year old driver who struck the young couple left the scene of the crash and later turned himself in to Pasco County authorities. Annually in Florida, more than 150 people are killed by drivers who cause a crash and then leave the scene.
When someone is injured seriously or dies in a crash caused by a hit-and-run driver, many times the only chance they have to receive financial compensation for their losses is through their own uninsured motorist insurance. This all important coverage would cover the losses the driver who was at fault should have covered, but couldn’t because they had no insurance.
