On May 7th, Jim Dodson Law sponsored “Bike to School Day” in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the Largo Police Department and local bike shop, Chainwheel Drive. National Bike to School Day is celebrated across the country and is coordinated by the National Center for Safe Routes to School to teach cycling safety to elementary age students.
“As a cyclist, I am committed to teaching bicycle safety to young kids, it has to start at an early age. “Bike to School Day” presented the perfect opportunity to reinforce how important it is to always wear a bike helmet and to encourage safe riding skills,” Jim Dodson said. “I am thrilled to see the response we received and am grateful to our partners for making this all possible for the kids.”
The day’s event began when fifty students from Mildred Helms Elementary School, in Largo hopped on their bikes and met us in the parking lot of Publix supermarket on West Bay Drive before school! We supplied a light breakfast and bike helmet fittings by our own certified helmet fitter, Kati Jones working together with Rhonda from FDOT. Mike, from Chainwheel Drive did safety checks on the kids’ bike equipment and Largo PD distributed safety helmets and bike lights to all children who did not have them.
FDOT distributed free bicycle safety activity booklets to the children before they were safely escorted by Largo police as they rode their bikes the short distance to school. Bay News 9 was on hand to film the morning events! Thank you to all who participated!
