A man charged with DUI manslaughter in a crash that killed an elderly man in 2012 was sentenced this week to 17 years in prison. Court records show his prison term will be followed by one year of probation and community control.
The drunk driver ran a red light at the intersection of 49th Street and 62nd Avenue N. in Pinellas Park and crashed with two other vehicles. Charles Berry, 81, died from injuries he suffered according to a Tampa Bay Times news report. Two others were injured in the collision.
The DUI driver’s blood alcohol level (BAC) was more than three times the limit at which a driver in Florida is considered drunk. The stretch of road where the crash occurred has a posted speed limit of 40 mph. Reports say the man responsible for the fatal wreck was driving 61 to 64 mph at the time of the collision.
This is another tragic example of an innocent victim, who lost their life at the hands of driver who was not only drunk, but speeding. Too many impaired drivers place others at risk by their dangerous conduct.
