The morning news was full of reports about Justin Beiber being arrested today in Miami for DUI (driving under the influence.) Local and national news said he was stopped by police for speeding and drag racing – allegedly going more than twice the posted speed limit in a residential neighborhood. The officer who pulled him over smelled a strong odor of alcohol when he approached the singer’s car.
According to the arrest report, the 19 year-old had a flushed face, smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes. Miami Police Chief Raymond Martinez said Beiber admitted to drinking beer, smoking marijuana and taking prescription pills.
The teen failed a field sobriety test and was taken to the police station for a Breathalyzer and then to the county jail for processing. Under Florida Law, he was required to spend a mandatory 8-hour drying out period in jail after a drunk driving arrest.
The teen was also charged with driving with an expired license and resisting arrest. Apparently, he became belligerent about being pulled over and searched but was later cooperative at the police station.
Justin Beiber, like every person who decides to drink and drive, made an intentional decision to do it. He is very fortunate while DUI that he did not injure or kill another driver or even himself.
In Florida, It is unlawful for anyone under the age of 21 with a BAC of .02 to drive a vehicle. Drivers ages 16-19 are seven times more likely to be killed in an accident than a sober driver after one or two drinks. (NTSA)
