16-Year Old Driver Struck and Injured a Fort Myers Man Riding a Scooter

Wink News reported a 49-year-old Ft. Myers man is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car on his scooter. Lee County law enforcement were called to the scene following a crash in which a 16 year old driver struck the man while he was attempting to make a U-turn from the southbound lane of McGregor Blvd. The teenager was reported to have said he didn’t see the scooter. Tragically, the man was ejected from the scooter in the impact. The article did not say if the scooter rider was wearing a helmet. No charges are pending at this time.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) reported there were more than 1,000 scooter and moped accidents in 2011. Crashes between scooters and cars are often caused by drivers making improper turns in front of a scooter such as a left turn or just not seeing them. Motorists must use caution when making a turn, another motorist or a pedestrian or a cyclist’s life may depend on it.
