For Immediate Release
LARGO, FL, Sept. 19, 2014— Hundreds of Mildred Helms Elementary School students and their parents will take part in Walk to School Day on October 8th. The event, co-sponsored by Jim Dodson Law, is celebrated worldwide each year to educate children about the importance of pedestrian safety and the health and environmental benefits of walking.
Through the collaborative efforts of school and community, this year’s Walk to School Day promises to provide fun activities and hands on learning for the kids. The event will feature a DJ and music furnished by Largo Recreation; a tour of a fire truck and an ambulance, provided by Sunstar EMS and the Largo Fire Department; free pedestrian safety coloring books donated by safety advocate and lawyer, Jim Dodson, and a healthy snack to start the day, courtesy of Publix Supermarket.
“Everyone will be a pedestrian at some moment in their life, so it is important kids know how to walk safely to avoid being injured. Join us as we walk to school on October 8,” said Largo Police Sgt. George Edmiston.
Jim Dodson added “It’s never too soon to teach kids how to be safe while walking; it’s vitally important they understand the dangers posed by cars. We are happy to once again host this event with other safety advocates in the community. Accident prevention begins with education. I encourage every Mildred Helms student and their parent who are able, to participate in Walk to School Day!”
The celebration, which begins at 7:30 a.m., will be held in the parking lot of the Publix Supermarket, located at 857 West Bay Drive. At 8:15 a.m., the Largo Police Department will provide Mildred Helm students a private police escort, as they walk to school.
