If you live or commute to work in Pasco County, Florida you know that the intersections of U.S.19 are a huge concern when it comes to car accidents, pedestrian collisions and bicycle crashes. In 2018, the Tampa Bay Times reported that Pasco County’s “injury wrecks more than double the state’s average” and as no surprise U.S. 19 in west Pasco show that fatal car accidents are more prevalent here than elsewhere in the region, state and nation. Despite road improvements like new street signs with larger lettering, more street lights, sidewalks and medians Pasco County roads remain the most dangerous.
To put things in perspective a study was conducted from 2011 to 2016. It showed that the fatal crashes in Pasco County occurred at a rate of 1.66 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. The national rate is 1.18, all the other counties in Florida is 1.32 and the six-county regions of Tampa Bay is 1.36. This means that Pasco County averaged 67.4 fatal accidents over the five year period which is 20 percent higher than the rest of Florida, essentially meaning that there are more deaths on Pasco County roads than anywhere else.
Unfortunately, the numbers are worse for car accidents with injuries. The injury crash rate was more than double the state’s average. Florida averages 504 injury collisions each year. Since 2015, Pasco County's injuries from vehicle accidents was over 1,100 annually.
