Is it Actually Safer to Ride a Bike on the Sidewalk?

Video Transcription:
Most people who ride their bicycle on the sidewalk have justified in their mind that they think it's safer. And this is just like people who cycle on the road who think it's safer to ride on the road. Attorney and avid cyclist Jim Dodson believes that it's safer to ride on the road. Through his practice some of the worse bicycle accident cases have been because the cyclist was riding on the sidewalk.

Cars simply aren't expecting cyclists to be riding on the sidewalk and there are so many reasons why they don't see them. Here are a few reasons:

  • Drivers aren't looking for cyclists riding on a sidewalk
  • Cyclists can ride in either direction on a sidewalk which means that the drivers aren't expecting a cyclist to be coming from the right
  • Shrubs, buildings, signage and other things tend to distract the driver when coming across a sidewalk
