Even when a pedestrian is taking all the right precautions they can be injured while crossing a marked crosswalk. Jim Dodson demonstrates how this can occur on Clearwater Largo road. This road has high visibility crosswalks and a 30 mile per hour speed limit that was specifically designed to promote pedestrian safety. However, as you will see in the video Jim has to wait five minutes to cross the road even though when a pedestrian approaches the crosswalk all cars are suppose to stop and let him across.
A study in Clearwater revealed that pedestrians may have only a 60% chance that drivers will stop for them in a marked crosswalk. This is why it is extremely important that you make eye contact with the drivers before crossing.
