Sadly, over the last year there has been a shocking number of deaths of cyclists in Hillsborough and Pinellas county. What are some of the common elements of these accidents?
There was a recent newspaper report about a surprising number of deaths of cyclists in 2012 between Hillsborough and Pinellas county. There were 23 cycling deaths. What I found interesting was that over half of those deaths involved a cyclist going through or being in an intersection. As a cyclist, I know how dangerous intersections can be. Another factor about this was that in half the cases the investigation found that the cyclist had also done something wrong in contributing to the accident.
Now in my practice, I’m committed to holding drivers responsible when they’ve made a mistake and it cost the life or the injury to a cyclist but a cyclist has a role in this as well. If a cyclist is involved in an accident and they’re at fault to some degree, remember that they’re percentage of fault is going to reduce their claim by that percentage.
So, there’s a practical reason why we need to be careful as cyclists and obey the same rules we hold drivers to.
