The Fort Myers Police Department in February conducted their high intensity pedestrian and cycling awareness campaigns. Part of what they did was to stop hundreds of cyclists and pedestrians and give them safety equipment. These items were to help make them more visible. For pedestrians they handed out reflective bracelets, safety vests and keychain lights. For cyclists, they made sure they had a front light and a rear reflector.
This campaign tell us that the police department knows and understands that if pedestrians and cyclists are more visible they are more safe. So the takeaway message from this is that as pedestrians and cyclists we need to do everything we can to make ourselves more visible to drivers by what we wear, what we carry and what we ride.
