Why You Should Hire a Florida Lawyer When You Live Out of State

Video Transcription:
Florida has a large number of people who come here temporarily whether they are on vacation, for business or sometimes wintering. When someone who lives out of state who is injured as a pedestrian here or tragically even a family member has died, there is often a tendency to want to consider hiring a lawyer back home to take care of it.

Why Do You Need a Florida Lawyer?

One of the most important things is that Florida lawyers understand and know Florida laws. I've had situations where lawyers are calling me from out of state who have actually allowed the statute of limitations, the time for bringing a claim, to run out because they didn't know the law in Florida.

The other thing is we are here and we have the opportunity to hire an investigator to get the case properly investigated so we can prove what we need to prove against the driver and make the claim.

But, finally I think the important thing to remember is when a claims adjuster is handling a Florida pedestrian accident case receives a letter from a lawyer out of state, that adjuster knows that the lawyer can't file suit in Florida without employing a local Florida lawyer. This changes the relationship and the attitude of the adjuster because now they have an advantage over that lawyer and it tends to make them want to try to shave or reduce what they would otherwise settle the case for because they think they can probably push a little bit more against the out of state lawyer than they can against a lawyer who is right here and who can file suit if the amount that is being offered is too low or unfair.

These are things to keep in mind if you were in an accident here in Florida but live out of state.
